- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp baking soda
- ¼ tsp salt
- ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup buttermilk
- ½ cup hot water
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)

- ⅓ cup cocoa powder
- 2–4 tbsp milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
- Green food coloring (for grass effect)
- Football-themed sprinkles
- Miniature edible decorations (like footballs)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven and prepare the cupcake liners: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). While it’s heating up, line a cupcake pan with your favorite cupcake liners.
- Mix dry ingredients in a bowl: In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Cream butter and sugar in a separate bowl: In another bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs and vanilla to the butter mixture: Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk.
- Incorporate hot water carefully: Stir in the hot water to enhance the chocolate flavor.
- Fill cupcake liners and bake: Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full with batter. Bake for 18-22 minutes.
- Prepare the frosting while cupcakes cool: Beat the softened unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until combined.
- Frost the cupcakes and add decorations: Use a piping bag to frost the cooled cupcakes with green frosting and add football-themed decorations.
Notes
Avoid overmixing the batter to prevent dense cupcakes.
