These Football Cupcakes are the perfect blend of moist chocolate cake and creamy frosting, adorned with fun football-themed decorations that make them ideal for any celebration.

  • Total Time: 42 minutes
  • Yield: 12 cupcakes 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup hot water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • ⅓ cup cocoa powder
  • 24 tbsp milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • Green food coloring (for grass effect)
  • Football-themed sprinkles
  • Miniature edible decorations (like footballs)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven and prepare the cupcake liners: Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). While it’s heating up, line a cupcake pan with your favorite cupcake liners.
  • Mix dry ingredients in a bowl: In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Cream butter and sugar in a separate bowl: In another bowl, cream the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy.
  • Add eggs and vanilla to the butter mixture: Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  • Combine wet and dry ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk.
  • Incorporate hot water carefully: Stir in the hot water to enhance the chocolate flavor.
  • Fill cupcake liners and bake: Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full with batter. Bake for 18-22 minutes.
  • Prepare the frosting while cupcakes cool: Beat the softened unsalted butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing until combined.
  • Frost the cupcakes and add decorations: Use a piping bag to frost the cooled cupcakes with green frosting and add football-themed decorations.

Notes

Avoid overmixing the batter to prevent dense cupcakes.
Store frosted cupcakes in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
Experiment with different frosting flavors for variety.
